Registration Stereotyping

So we went to the library today to return some books and get some new!  I was checking out the board for upcoming events and noticed they have started a Lego Design class once a month for 7 to 11 year olds!  I was excited.  It is only an hour long and it would give Lauren a chance to meet others that like to do what she does!

So off I trekked to the desk to register her.  The lady looked up at me and said "What is your SONS name?"

Ok, Ok, I know Legos aren't always a GIRLY thing...in fact I wish Lego would do a better job of not stereotyping their product - since the "girl" brand Belleville is SO girly - Lauren doesn't even like it!  We have to hunt for the products that are not starwars, not bionicles etc...

BUT seriously - she could have at least assumed maybe it was a girl I was registering since I had two blonde girls standing next

Oh that IS frustrating! She has got the Lego gift...she'll show up all those "boys!"

That does suck...however, I am glad that there is a fun outlet for her to meet others who enjoy Legos, too! Very cool.

You know somewhere there is a librarian blogging the story...

And why is it that I am now humming the song, "Anything you can do, I can do better..."

It is hard to find Legos that are not all boy.

You know, there are some huge contests around with building Legos. I wish I could remember what they are called but my friend's son participated in one and won a prize. Maybe the library group can help you with finding some.

Thats so annoying and rude! Tim's little sister loves legos too.. she isn't real good at making what the kit is for but she likes to make her own things. I showed her some of Lauren's master pieces! She loved them and wished she could meet another girl into legos!

My teen-aged daughter loved playing with Legos when she was younger-:)

Maybe the next time the librarian will think twice before asking for the "boy's name"

HAHA! :-) They have a lego building club here and they call it the 'Nerd Herd'! They even go to competitions to engineer stuff! Will can't wait to join.

Miss Lauren is way better at Legos than ANY boy I know. So cool that they have a class though! I love the library for that very reason.
